The Damages of Garbage Pollution

Usually people don't think garbage would cause environmental pollution. In fact, garbage can cause the drop of air quality, water pollution and waste of resource. Besides, it influences the economic development.

Thus, prevention and management of garbage becomes a new important task for us. Therefore we need to know where the garbage comes from first.

First, it comes from industries. Industries produce various waster water, gas, toxic substances and chemical wastes. If they are placed in the open air or dumped or illegally poured into the river. As a result, the environment is damaged.

Second, domestic garbage: As citizens have weak awareness of environmental protection, they scatter waste paper and glasses. They use a lot of disposable products at will. Thus, much pollution is caused such as dust pollution.

Third, medical garbage: special products with a lot of bacteria have been leaved behind, including medical polluted water, medical wastes, one- shot injectors and so on. If they are not careful handled and directly poured into the river or simply placed or even illegally resold, some communicable disease would spread.

Garbage brings lots of damages to the environment:
First, water pollution: garbage produces a large amount of acidic, basic, toxic wastes. Some waste water contains mercury, lead, and cadmium which pollute the underground water once they penetrate into the ground. Most rivers are polluted by ammonia nitrogen, volatile phenol, and permanganate. Some rivers lose the self- cleaning function and thus, influence the reproduction of aquatic life.

Second, air pollution: in trash area, because of the burning and placing of garbage, there are various toxic gases containing sulfur. Dusts and small particles fly with the wind and thus, sulfur dioxide in the air significantly increases. Thus, acid rain frequently happens, so does the particle pollution.

Third, soil pollution: many areas are used to place garbage and thus, land degradation and desertification happen. Because of a large amount of plastic bags, waste metals are leaved in the soil, the soil is hardened, and not suitable for planting crops.

Fourth, harmful to human beings' health: toxic gases are released by garbage and fly everywhere with the wind. As a result, sulfur dioxide, lead in the air arise and cause many respiratory diseases. When underground water is polluted, people may get diarrhea, trachoma and other diseases.

Fifth, harmful to the economic development: according to researches, 70% of garbage can be recycled. If it is recycled, it can create many profits, very helpful to the economic development and employment rate. Otherwise, it causes resource waste and ecological disruption which absolutely influence economic development.

Noise and Air Pollution

Traffic jams, industrial waste, industrial plants; it is a fact that in our cities pollution is reigning supreme in all possible forms. Though this problem has specifically been on the world power's agenda since long, and despite constant exhortations to all the citizens to assist in this, all struggle seems to have produced negligible results.

We have not heard much about the noise pollution, but surely it is a sort of affliction of our own society. Just give a thought to our large number of cities; noise of horns and motors all on the road, loud music in the restaurants and clubs, noises from our factories, airports and construction sites...the noise from all these sources can cause severe damage to our ears and mental health. The noise pollution can actually cause three kinds of problems for us: temporary disturbances in our organs, damage to our organs and or annoyance.

For this reason there are some precise rules and regulations for the industrial plants and clubs, for imposing the limits which you cannot cross under any circumstances and also to forbid the construction of such clubs or factories near the residential areas. For reducing the noise pollution, the buildings can be suitably equipped with the acoustical panels which can be suitably assembled for erecting the acoustic enclosures, partition walls or barriers. Similarly building housing the noise producing machines can have some special soundproof designs.

Factories are main reason for the noise and air pollution. The smoke and the dust generated in several industrial plants in the production cycle can result in serious damage to the environment as well as to the health of the people.

In order to limit the damage, the factories should adopt much more efficient systems for smoke and dust suction. These suction machines are installed in the factories and they filter the harmful dust and smoke before releasing them in the atmosphere. These systems greatly improve the internal and external environment and help in reducing pollution levels to a great extent.

Different Types of Environmental Pollution

People always think that the water and air on the earth is endless, so they keep emitting million tons of waste gases into the sky and dumping numerous garbage into the rivers, lakes and oceans. As a result, human activities cause different types of environmental pollution.

First, land pollution:
The clean-up of the garbage has become an important issue in many big cities. Among the million tons of garbage every day, most can not be incinerated or decayed, such as plastics, rubber and glass, which are considered as the number one enemy of mankind.

Second, marine pollution:
This is mainly caused by the crude oil leaked from oil tanker and oil well, the pesticides and fertilizers used in agriculture, the sewage discharged from factories, and the acid solution exhausted from oil field. These wastes make most of the oceans and lakes polluted. As a result, not only the marine organisms are affected, but both the birds and humans may also be poisoned because of eating these organisms.

Third, air pollution:
This is the most direct and serious environmental pollution, mainly from the carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide emitted from factories, cars, power plants, and so on. Every day, there are many people infected with respiratory organ or visual organ diseases due to the exposure to these polluted air.

Fourth, water pollution:
Water pollution happens when certain substance enters into the water and changes the chemical, physical, biological characteristics of the water, which then affects the efficient use of water, endangers human health, causes harm on the environment, and leads to the deterioration of water quality.

Fifth, air pollution:
Air pollution means that the concentration of pollutants in the air reaches to or above the hazardous level, which leads to the damage to ecosystems and the normal survival and development of human life. As a result, it will bring harms both on human being and creatures.

Sixth, noise pollution:
Noise pollution is the phenomenon when the environmental noise exceeds the national emission standards of environmental noise, and interferences with the normal work, study, and living of other people.

How To Manage Waste Pollution?

Let us first make an attempt of defining wastes. Wastes can be the result of biological activities of living organisms or any other product which has undergone modification to such an extent that it should not be allowed to stay any more in the surrounding. They are basically products which are the results of human activities if we can generally speak. And now we can define waste management. Wastes have to be managed and that involves collection, transfer, gradual processing and finally recycling of the waste products. Waste management is directly linked to our health and well being and at the same time affects the environment in a significant way.

The most common way in which wastes are treated are now being found quite dangerous as such and in this way it would contribute to landfills. Waste management has become quite a headache for big cities as solid wastes are piling up day by day. There are certain numbers of synthetic products which is in no way bio degradable and hence as a result of this even after separating and categorizing wastes, no impact can be felt largely.

This is the reason why we should shift slowly to natural products which are more organic in content and bio degradable so that they are not contributing in the landfills. Incineration is however being supported by many reputed organizations but now a huge debate is taking place and all the results are more or less pointing towards the fact that incineration can no more be the solution to waste management problems in big cities.
